Teaming Up with The Toronto Zoo and Miller Zoo to Raise Awareness About Cheetah Conservation

Raising awareness about the plight of cheetahs in the wild is no small task when these magnificent animals live thousands of kilometres away, roaming the grasslands of Africa. Yet distance is no barrier to action — and that’s exactly the message Cheetah Canada representatives brought to two special events, one at the Toronto Zoo and the other at Miller Zoo.  Angela Chan attended The Toronto Zoo event while Patricia Elias joined Miller Zoo. Both are board members of Cheetah Canada.

At both locations, our representative joined forces with the zoos’ dedicated cheetah keeper to share the vital work of the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) in protecting this iconic species in its natural habitat. Visitors had the chance to hear firsthand accounts from keepers, who gave engaging talks about cheetah behaviour, biology, and the growing threats these animals face in the wild. Alongside these talks, our information booth gave guests the opportunity to learn more about CCF’s conservation programs and how they can get involved.

These events are more than just a fun day out — they’re a powerful way for us to connect directly with the public and spark meaningful conversations about conservation. One of the key messages we shared was the critical role cheetahs play as an apex predator in maintaining a healthy, balanced ecosystem. By keeping prey populations in check, cheetahs help preserve the delicate web of life that sustains countless other species across the African savanna.

But protecting cheetahs isn’t just about the animals themselves — it’s about the people who share the land with them. A cornerstone of CCF’s approach is working directly with rural farmers who live alongside cheetahs. By providing training, resources, and tools such as livestock guarding dogs, CCF helps these communities protect their herds without resorting to lethal measures against cheetahs. This kind of coexistence isn’t just good for wildlife — it safeguards farmers’ livelihoods while preserving the natural environment for generations to come.

Events like these at The Toronto Zoo and Miller Zoo remind us that conservation is a shared responsibility, one that connects communities across continents. Every conversation sparked at our booth, every question answered by a keeper, and every visitor who leaves with a deeper understanding of cheetah conservation brings us one step closer to a future where these incredible cats continue to roam free in the wild.
