Together for Wildlife: Taiwan and CCF Join Forces to Expand Rewilding Efforts

Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) is proud to announce a new contribution from the Government of Taiwan to support the next phase of development at the Cheetah Rescue and Conservation Centre (CRCC) in Somaliland. This month, Taiwan provided $10,000 in seed funding to help establish a 200-hectare Cheetah Rewilding Enclosure, marking another important step in the shared mission to protect and restore cheetah populations in the Horn of Africa.

Since the launch of the CRCC in 2022, Taiwan has been a steadfast partner in CCF’s conservation initiatives. Through the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF), Taiwan has made annual contributions to support projects that enhance local capacity to combat wildlife trafficking, promote community education, and strengthen wildlife protection in Somaliland.

This collaboration began in December 2022, when Amb. Timothy T. Y. Hsiang, Secretary General of TaiwanICDF, and Dr. Laurie Marker, CCF’s Founder and Executive Director, signed a Volunteer Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on International Cheetah Day. The agreement paved the way for Taiwanese volunteers to join CCF in advancing cheetah conservation in the region.

Last year, Taiwan’s support helped fund the construction of the CRCC’s Education Centre with a $25,000 seed contribution — an investment that has already made an impact by improving awareness and engagement around wildlife protection.

In his recent remarks, Ambassador Hsiang shared an inspiring message of collaboration and hope:

“Great things are done by a series of small things brought together,” he said. “Even the Burj Khalifa starts from a grain of sand. By throwing a gem to attract more gems, I am convinced that other phases of funding for the Rewilding Project can be accumulated accordingly because of Taiwan’s leading contribution.”

He concluded,

“Taiwan is proud to support the conservation of wildlife and to combat climate change and biodiversity loss. Please remember, together we can achieve more.”

The funds provided will enable CCF to begin work on the Rewilding Precinct, expanding rehabilitation space and creating an environment where rescued cheetahs can develop the skills they need to survive in the wild.

CCF is deeply grateful for Taiwan’s continued leadership and commitment to wildlife conservation. Through partnerships like this, we move closer to a future where humans and wildlife can coexist and thrive together.
