Tackling Food Insecurity in Namibia: A New Initiative by CCF & Governor Pijoo Nganate

In Namibia’s Omaheke Region, the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) is taking a bold step toward addressing malnutrition and food insecurity through a groundbreaking initiative in collaboration with Governor Pijoo Nganate. This programme aims to create long-term food solutions for vulnerable communities by leveraging sustainable agriculture.

A New Approach to Food Security

At the heart of this initiative is dairy goat farming, a proven strategy that enhances regional food security while empowering local farmers. On January 16, 2025, CCF delivered 20 female dairy goats and one male goat to the Governor’s team, marking a significant milestone in combatting hunger. Additional resources, including greenhouses, a piggery, 200 chickens, and rabbits, have been introduced to further support local food production.

The collaboration began in August 2024 when Governor Nganate reached out to Dr. Laurie Marker, CCF’s Founder and Executive Director. Recognising the urgent need for solutions, Governor Nganate visited CCF’s Headquarters in September 2024 with 13 young farmers—primarily women—who received hands-on training in dairy farming. Now, these farmers are equipped to run local dairy farms, ensuring fresh milk reaches their communities.

Making an Immediate Impact

One of the first achievements of this initiative is the supply of fresh milk to a soup kitchen in Gobabis, which provides three daily meals to vulnerable children. The need for such programmes is critical—between May and July 2024, 269 malnutrition cases and 23 deaths were recorded in Omaheke Region. With 28 daycare centres providing meals, this initiative will expand food security efforts as resources grow.

‘This initiative is not just about providing food in the short term. It’s about establishing sustainable systems that support future generations,’ said Governor Nganate.

Dr. Marker reinforced the importance of this collaboration, stating, ‘We are honoured to partner with the Governor’s office in this critical work.’

A Sustainable Future

This initiative is more than a short-term solution—it’s about building resilience through sustainable agriculture. CCF and Governor Nganate are creating lasting change in the fight against food insecurity by equipping communities with the tools and training they need.
