Welcome to our August edition of ‘Photographer Takeover’! This month, we’re thrilled to spotlight Pete Martin, a talented wildlife photographer with a particular passion for cheetahs. Pete’s journey from GCSE photography student to dedicated wildlife conservationist is as inspiring as his stunning images. Let’s dive into Pete’s world of wildlife photography!
From big cats to big dreams
Pete’s love affair with photography began during his GCSE studies. Although he took a brief hiatus, his passion was reignited when he discovered the captivating world of big cat photography. “I found photos of big cats taken by other photographers which inspired me to go for wildlife photography,” Pete shares. “I’ve loved it ever since.”
Based in Essex, just outside London, Pete has found some favourite local haunts for capturing wildlife, especially his beloved cheetahs. Colchester Zoo, Wingham Wildlife Park, and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo top his list, but he’s always on the lookout for new locations to photograph his favourite animals.
Memorable moments: Meeting Colonel Tom
When asked about his most memorable experiences, Pete’s eyes light up as he recounts meeting Colonel Tom, a male cheetah born at Colchester Zoo and now residing at Wingham Wildlife Park. Named after the late Captain (Colonel) Tom Moore, this encounter left an indelible mark on Pete’s photographic journey.
Another highlight for Pete was his visit to Port Lympne Safari and Wild Animal Park. “It gave me a taste of a safari experience,” he says, hinting at future aspirations. “I hope to do a real one in South Africa someday!”
While Pete enjoys photographing a variety of wildlife, big cats and bears hold a special place in his heart. “Cheetahs, tigers, and jaguars are my favourites,” he admits. “Their beautiful, unique markings make them incredibly photogenic subjects.”
What’s next for Pete?
Always eager to explore new territories, Pete has his sights set on Hamerton Zoo Park for his next cheetah photography adventure. “It’s somewhere new on my list,” he says excitedly. “It will be nice to explore new places.”
Pete’s passion for cheetahs extends beyond photography. He’s also a dedicated volunteer for CCF UK. “I was inspired by the amazing work CCF as a whole do in rescuing and raising awareness for cheetahs,” he explains. “I thought I’d give some time to help raise awareness for something I love.”
Pete is particularly excited about the upcoming Cheetah Fit Challenge 2024. “I can’t wait to get involved,” he says enthusiastically. “It’s a great opportunity to combine cheetah conservation and awareness with raising money and keeping fit.”
