Calum, the Livestock Guardian Dog Manager at the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) in Namibia, has embarked on a journey marked by personal loss, resilience, and a profound commitment to wildlife conservation. Five years ago, his family’s world was irreversibly altered by the tragic passing of their father and husband due to sepsis. This loss left an indelible mark on their hearts and ignited a passion within Calum to make a meaningful difference in his father’s honour.
Tomorrow (May 18, 2024) , Calum will take on a monumental challenge alongside his sister and mother: the Jurassic Coast Ultra Marathon. This gruelling 58-kilometre race along the rugged coastline is not just a test of physical endurance but a journey deeply intertwined with cherished family memories. The Jurassic Coast holds a special place in their hearts, as it was a beloved holiday destination for the family.
Therefore, this event marks Calum’s first fundraising endeavour since his father’s passing. He has chosen to raise awareness and funds for the Cheetah Conservation Fund, aligning his personal journey with his professional commitment to conservation. Every step he takes during the ultra marathon will be a tribute to his father’s strength and courage and a testament to the cherished moments they shared.
Running for a cause
The urgency of Calum’s mission is underscored by the plight of the cheetah, Africa’s most endangered big cat. Once numbering over 100,000 and ranging across vast areas of Africa and Asia, today only 7,100 cheetahs remain in the wild, confined to just 9% of their natural range. The decline of this majestic species highlights the critical need for conservation efforts like those led by the CCF.
Through this fundraising challenge, Calum aims to turn personal tragedy into triumph. His journey is a powerful reminder that by working together, we can make a significant impact and create a legacy of hope. Calum’s story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of honouring loved ones through meaningful action.
