Recently, Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) launched a Cheetah Ranger program in Namibia, supported by the UK Darwin Initiative. The initiative was modeled after Namibia’s pioneering Lion Ranger program, a community-based initiative launched to protect desert-adapted lions in the northwestern part of the country by preventing human wildlife conflict. Just like the Lion Rangers, the new Cheetah Rangers are trained to patrol vast landscapes, track the movements of wild cheetahs, and work directly with local communities to prevent conflicts between humans and wildlife.
The inaugural class of 28 Cheetah Rangers has graduated and was deployed into the field to protect cheetahs in the wild. In late January, Dr. Marker and staff from CCF visited two of the eight conservancies CCF is currently working with in western Namibia. In these conservancies, CCF has already installed camera traps and conducted surveys with scat detection dogs.
Stay tune.
