It’s International Day for Biological Diversity!

Humans depends on healthy and vibrant ecosystems for our water, food, medicines, clothes, fuel, shelter and energy, just to name a few.  CCF has been collaborating with local communities living along side the cheetah to transform their relationship with nature. The cheetah, once seen as vermin, is now seen as a national treasurer by many.

Today, CCF’s Education Department commemorated International Biodiversity Day by going to two schools – the Paresis Secondary School and the Otjiwarongo Christian Private School. The learners received an amazing presentation on the importance of helping to advocate and keeping Namibia biodiversity healthy. They learned all the benefits we receive from the natural ecosystems and how they can be ecologically orientated people vs EGO driven people. They loved the huge positive impact predators have on the ecosystem and the role cheetahs play as key species and what it means to be a key species (Apex predator).

Here are some of the species in Namibia.

According to the International Union for Conservation Nature (IUCN), more than 44,000 species around the world are facing extinction, including 26% of mammal species. Cheetahs are disappearing too. A little more than a century ago there were nearly 100,000 cheetahs in the wild in Africa and Asia, but this number has plummeted, and the cats have disappeared from approximately 90% of their historical range, with less than 7,500 mature cheetahs remaining in the wild.
