We are thrilled to share an important – and adorable – update from our Livestock Guarding Dog (LGD) program! In late November, one of our Livestock Guarding Dogs, Koda, graced us with EIGHT puppies! With two males and six females, this litter comprises a new generation of canine ambassadors, poised to make a lasting impact on CCF’s conservation initiatives. Each one of these tiny puppies has the potential to play a crucial role in fostering coexistence between local communities and wildlife.
At just under three weeks old, these pups are thriving under the care of their mother – and CCF’s dedicated staff! We are pleased to report all the puppies are gaining weight steadily, a testament to the meticulous care and attention they receive! Recently, their eyes opened too, allowing the curious pups to begin exploring the world around them. They also started the weaning process, which involves transitioning to eating mashed food. At this stage, each puppy also gets a uniquely colored collar to aid in their identification. This distinction ensures that each puppy gets individualized care – and our staff are fully committed to ensuring the well-being of these remarkable puppies as they continue to grow and develop.
For the last three decades, pups just like this have been making a big difference for wildlife. When placed with a herd of livestock, these guardian canines serve as a non-lethal deterrent to predators, like cheetahs, helping to prevent conflicts between people and big carnivores. Since 1994, CCF has placed over 800 Livestock Guarding Dogs on farms across Namibia and otherparts of Africa. We eagerly anticipate the day when these tiny pups will be ready to begin theirfarm journeys, bridging the gap between humans and wildlife, and fostering harmonious coexistence between people and predators in Namibia.
Join us in celebrating the profound impact these puppies will have toward mitigating human-wildlife conflict in Namibia – and stay tuned as we share updates on their progress! You can sponsorship here.
