Preserving wildlife: CCF’s efforts on International Day for Biological Diversity

On this International Day for Biological Diversity, we celebrate the remarkable array of wildlife that coexists with the iconic cheetah in the Horn of Africa. From the graceful Kudu calf to the majestic giraffe, each species contributes to the rich tapestry of biodiversity in this region. At the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF), we recognise the importance of safeguarding not only the cheetah but also its diverse habitat and the myriad species that call it home.

Exploring cheetah’s habitat and conservation efforts

In the vast savannas of Africa, numerous fascinating creatures share their habitat with cheetahs. The graceful Kudu calf, with its elegant spiralled horns, grazes alongside cheetahs, showcasing the delicate balance of nature. Waterbucks, known for their distinctive shaggy coats, thrive in wetland habitats, forming an integral part of the ecosystem. Towering above the savanna, giraffes coexist peacefully with cheetahs, while intelligent baboons contribute to shaping their environment. Even elusive leopards, with their spotted coats, share habitats with their swift-footed counterparts, albeit occasionally competing for resources.

Camera traps

At CCF, our commitment extends beyond the cheetah to all species inhabiting its environment. Utilising innovative camera trap technology, we gather valuable data on wildlife populations, behaviours, and habitat requirements. These insights not only aid in conservation efforts for individual species but also provide a comprehensive understanding of ecosystem dynamics, including human and livestock interactions with wildlife.

Below, you can see a few of the takes we did of different animals with our camera traps, including cheetahs.

Restoring and preserving habitats

Preserving and restoring habitats are paramount for the coexistence of diverse wildlife. Our Bushblok programme, initiated in 2001, plays a pivotal role in restoring and preserving cheetah habitats and those of their companions. By promoting sustainable land management practices and restoring degraded landscapes, we ensure a brighter future for both wildlife and local communities. As the Bushblok program expands, it not only contributes to habitat restoration but also creates new biomass energy potential, fostering a sustainable ecosystem.

With this in mind, on this International Day for Biological Diversity, let us reaffirm our commitment to protecting the rich tapestry of life that surrounds us. Together, through collective conservation efforts, we can ensure a harmonious coexistence between humans and wildlife, preserving the wonders of the natural world for generations to come.
