From Hampshire to the Wild: Lauren Sheard’s Photographer Takeover

From an early age, Lauren Sheard knew her life would revolve around animals. At first, she dreamed of becoming a vet, then a zookeeper. But after studying animal management, she realised that working directly in the zoo industry wasn’t the right fit—especially with the demands of being around the public.

Instead, Lauren found another way to combine her two passions: animals and photography. Using her father’s old camera and the skills he passed down to her, she began developing her craft. Over time, she discovered that photography could be her way of helping animals by sharing their beauty and personalities with the world.

Lauren’s Passion for Big Cats

Lauren’s fascination with big cats started years ago while watching the TV series Big Cat Week. The cheetah episodes in particular captured her heart, and one of the first animals she ever photographed was a cheetah at Marwell Zoo. According to her, it was an imperfect shot, but one that remains deeply meaningful to her.

Since then, she has photographed many species, but big cats will always be special. “Any photo with a big cat is so powerful, it’s like they know how to pose for a camera,” Lauren says. “They’re goofy, strong, and full of character.”

Finding Wildlife Close to Home

Based in Hampshire, Lauren is a member of Marwell Zoo and enjoys visiting other zoos and nature reserves around the UK. She often photographs at Swanwick Lakes, where she captures local birdlife. She also volunteers at a local farm, which allows her to work closely with animals and observe the wildlife in the surrounding countryside.

For Lauren, every wildlife encounter is memorable—whether it’s a fleeting moment of peace or a playful expression. She especially enjoys the challenge of photographing cheetahs, which often hide behind vegetation but reward patience with striking portraits.

Sharing Nature’s Stories

While she doesn’t currently work in conservation, Lauren hopes to get involved in the future and dreams of photographing wildlife in Canada, South Africa, and Svalbard. Her ultimate goal is to showcase the unique personalities of the animals she photographs, creating images that connect viewers emotionally to her subjects.

Her advice for aspiring wildlife photographers? “Go for it. It’s therapeutic and rewarding. Observing wildlife teaches us lessons about life, patience, and respect for the natural world.”
