This month, we are thrilled to feature Harman Singh Heer as our Photographer of the Month. Growing up in Kenya, surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of nature and wildlife, he developed an early fascination with the natural world.
His love for photography began 13 years ago when he picked up his mother’s old Canon 450D DSLR camera and took on the role of the “photographer” during family safaris. What started as a way to document his experiences soon evolved into a lifelong passion for capturing fleeting moments in nature and preserving them forever.
Exploring the Beauty of Africa and Beyond
Now based in Perth, Western Australia, Harman has travelled extensively, but Kenya remains close to his heart. His favourite places to photograph include Amboseli National Park and Samburu National Reserve, known for their rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes.
Cheetahs hold a special place in his work among the many species he has captured through his lens. He believes these graceful big cats often go unnoticed next to the power of lions or the elusiveness of leopards, yet their struggle for survival in the African wilderness is remarkable.
Capturing Unforgettable Moments in the Wild
Over the years, Harman has had countless memorable encounters while photographing wildlife. One of his most unforgettable moments was witnessing the famous “Tano Bora” cheetah coalition of five drinking from a still pond at dawn.
“The water was so beautifully still, allowing me to capture one of my all-time favourite photographs of one of the five cheetahs and its reflection,” Harman shares.
Another awe-inspiring experience was being mere inches away from one of the last remaining Super Tuskers—an encounter that left him humbled by the presence of such a magnificent creature.

Advocacy Through Photography
While Harman does not currently work directly in conservation, he sees his photography as a powerful advocacy tool, helping raise awareness about wildlife and the importance of preserving their natural habitats. For aspiring wildlife photographers, his advice is simple but profound: develop a unique style that sets your work apart, whether through composition, aesthetic, or post-processing techniques.
