A Game-Changer for Cheetah Care: New Walk-In Refrigerator Transforms Daily Operations at CRCC

The Cheetah Rescue & Conservation Centre in Geed-Deeble has taken a significant step forward in animal care with the installation of a much-needed walk-in refrigerator—a seemingly simple addition that’s making a world of difference for both the dedicated team and the bush cats (these are the adult cheetahs in very large enclosures providing them an environment closes to their natural habitat).
Every Monday, the CRCC team receives a substantial meat delivery to feed their rescued cheetahs, caracals, and dogs. The logistics are staggering—on any given feeding day, the centre processes an impressive 187 kilograms of meat, including 20 whole carcasses, medication-laced portions, and specialized dietary requirements for different animals.
Until recently, this massive operation relied on inadequate refrigeration that couldn’t maintain proper temperatures, leading to potential spoilage and compromised food safety—a serious concern when caring for vulnerable wildlife.
The new walk-in refrigerator is simplifying the centre’s daily routine. Now, when meat is moved from the freezer for the next day’s feeding, it has a proper environment to thaw safely and maintain optimal freshness. As part of the installation, CRCC had to install a container to house the walking fridge, creating a dedicated working space for staff. This controlled thawing process is crucial for:
– Preventing spoilage of expensive, specialized animal feed
– Ensuring proper medication delivery through carefully prepared meat portions
– Maintaining sanitation standards that protect animal health
– Supporting individualized diets for animals with specific nutritional needs
More Than Just Storage
Beyond food preservation, this upgrade represents a significant improvement in operational efficiency. The team can now organize their substantial daily meat requirements more effectively, reducing preparation time and allowing them to focus more energy on direct animal care.
For the cheetahs and other rescued animals at CRCC, this means consistently fresh, properly prepared meals that support their health and recovery—a vital component in the centre’s mission to rescue and rehabilitate cheetahs.
Sometimes the most impactful improvements happen behind the scenes, and this walk-in refrigerator is proof that the right equipment can make all the difference in wildlife conservation efforts.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the Alan and Patricia Koval Foundation for their generous funding of this essential walk-in refrigerator, including all accessories and professional installation. Their investment in our infrastructure directly translates to better care for the rescued animals in our sanctuary.
